5 Tips for Buying a Natural Floor Cleaner

If you’re not sure how to chose a truly natural floor cleaner then keep reading.

In this post we’ll show you which ingredients in floor cleaners to avoid so you can make sure you’re not using any harmful chemicals inside your home.

Ready?

Let’s jump right in.

Natural floor cleaner

Why use a natural floor cleaner?

Your home is where you and your kids spend the largest part of the day.

That’s why you want to ensure the place is safe.

But here’s the problem.

Despite your best efforts you might be doing it wrong.

Most manufacturers of natural floor cleaners make the usual promise:

Safe ingredients.

But in realty, most of them include toxins.

And these toxins remain on the floor.

Until your kids breathe them in.

Or until their skin absorbs them.

From the skin and the lungs those toxins enter the blood stream.

And permeate throughout the entire body.

Toxins in natural floor cleaners

1. Fragrance

Many natural floor cleaning formulas include the mystery term “fragrance”.

Why get worried about this ingredient?

Because "fragrance" is used to hide up to 3,000 chemicals unknown to anyone but the manufacturer.

Should this set off your internal alarm?

You bet.

If a brand tells you their product is natural, but then doesn’t tell you exactly what's inside the formula, there's something fishy going on.

Luckily researchers have studied the health effect of this ingredient.

Peer-reviewed studies revealed that fragrance leads to respiratory symptoms and also allergic contact dermatitis, including eczema.

Want to prevent coughs and skin rashes?

Then keep this one off your floor.

On a further note:

According to the European Union Ecolabel program data, fragrance is also toxic to aquatic live.

In other words, since this ingredient isn't biodegradable you don’t want it to end up in your groundwater, lakes, and rivers.

Especially, if you like to eat seafood.

2. Methylisothiazolinone

This ingredient is a neurotoxin.

What's a neurotoxin?

It’s a poison that attacks the nervous system in your brain and spinal cord.

Why is this dangerous?

Because nervous systems are extraordinarily complex and even small changes can lead to significant functional disruptions.

But methylisothiazolinone causes even more health issues.

Like fragrances, it has been found to cause dermatitis.

And it’s dangerous to aquatic life.

In so many words:

Keep methylisothiazolinone off your floor.

3. Formaldehyde

Formaldehyde is highly carcinogenic to humans according to the National Toxicology Program.

And it causes skin burns, allergic reactions, respiratory irritation, and eye damage based on the finding of the Environmental Working Group (EWG).

How can brands use formaldehyde in their formulas and still label their products as natural?

We don’t know.

But what we do know, is that formaldehyde comes with a number of health-wrecking dangers, which is why it definitely doesn't belong on the same floor your kids play on.

Next:

4. 1,4-Dioxane

Here’s another suspected carcinogen found in “natural” floor cleaners.

Products with this ingredient might remove dirt.

But only at the price of your health.

And here’s the really tricky thing:

This chemical doesn’t appear on ingredient labels because it’s classified as a byproduct and not an actual ingredient.

So how can you still spot it in products?

Since it’s a byproduct of petrochemicals your best chance of avoiding 1,4-dioxane is to look for any chemical that is derived from crude oil such as Sodium Laureth Sulfate.

Hidden ingredients like these is why choosing a natural floor cleaner with all-natural ingredients is so important.

5. Propylene oxide

Propylene oxide is a proven carcinogen to animals and a possible one to humans.

And there’s more:

It also causes concern for skin, respiratory, and serious eye irritation.

What if you find this ingredient in a natural floor cleaner?

Leave it on the shelf.

Take-away points

Two important lessons:

1. Don’t blindly buy a natural floor cleaner based on marketing promises alone, but always read the ingredients.

2. No need to be intimidated by difficult sounding ingredients because you can look them up in the EWG Healthy Cleaning Guide.

Next, we’ll show you an amazing natural floor cleaner.
